Bjorn & Lori Hareid Senior Secondary Competition

PURPOSE

The Vancouver Academy of Music’s Bjorn & Lori Hareid Annual Senior Secondary Competition is designed to identify young talented artists and affords them recognition and career assistance. Participants are provided adjudication, a performance opportunity and prize money to assist them with their studies.

JUDGES

Judging will be by a jury of three distinguished professional musicians. The jury retains the right to withold any prize if in the opinion of the judges, it is not merited.

DEADLINE

Completed forms must be postmarked not later than January 11, 2010. 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Preliminary

Any Prelude and Fugue by J.S.Bach and one or more movements of a Sonata or any other major work for solo piano by Haydn, Mozart, Clementi or Beethoven. Total performance time not to exceed 15 minutes in Length

Semi-Final

Choice of one or two standard works for solo piano not to exceed 15 minutes in length.

Final

The six scholarship winners selected at the Semi-Final will be presented in recital on Sunday, January 24 in the Koerner Recital Hall, Vancouver Academy of Music, to select the winner of the Bjorn & Lori Hareid Scholarship Competition. Works to be performed will be chosen from the preliminary and Semi-Final auditions. 

This recital is open to the public.

PIANO COMPETITION RULES

1.  Applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants born between January 1, 1991 and December 31, 1995.

2.  Applicants must be students in grades 10 to 12.

3.  All pieces should be played from memory.

4.  A copy of the music must be submitted to the judges.

5.  All performances will be open to the public.

6.  A copy of the jury’s comments will be mailed to contestants.

7.  All decisions made by the jury are final and without appeal.

8.  Applications should be accompanied by a $40.00 registration fee, made payable to the Vancouver Academy of Music.

9.  The dates and times of auditions will be assigned according to the order of receipt of entry forms.
