GENERAL INFORMATION
The Vancouver Academy of Music offers its students the opportunity to work with a distinguished faculty of musicians in an environment which encourages the view that music is a group activity involving composer, performer, and listener.
The Preparatory Division provides music training in all areas suited to all age groups from pre-school children to adults. The courses offered include private study in piano, voice, classical guitar, and all band and orchestral instruments. Classes are available in Orff, Kodaly, music history, music theory, orchestra, chamber music, class piano and ballet. The Suzuki program offers instruction in violin, viola, cello, flute and piano.Master classes, technique classes, and workshops are held weekly for students of piano, voice, violin, viola, cello, and guitar.
Admission and Registration
Although there are no specific requirements for admission to the Vancouver Academy of Music Preparatory Division, students wishing to study privately and students wishing to enroll in the ballet program are required to audition for acceptance and placement.
Registration must be for a minimum of one sixteen-week semester and is normally for a full academic year consisting of two sixteen-week semesters. For ballet students, the year is divided into three twelve-week semesters. Each semester’s tuition is due and payable before lessons begin. Interest at the rate of 1.5% per month will be charged on all overdue accounts. Students will automatically be billed for the ensuing semester unless the office and the private teacher are notified of the student’s intention to withdraw.
Some semesters encompass more than sixteen weeks. This allows flexibility in scheduling, but each student will receive only sixteen lessons and/or classes each semester.
Private Instruction
Our system of individual instruction, designed to include students of all ages, accommodates those students who plan professional careers as performers, those who plan to become teachers, and those who study primarily for their own cultural development and enjoyment. One of the principal aims of the Vancouver Academy of Music is to make available to students of all ages excellent private instruction. Whatever the ultimate goal, the focus of the serious student’s work is the private lesson.
The student may choose either half hour, three-quarter hour or full hour private lessons weekly, and without additional fee each student will take a minimum of one hour class instruction weekly.
