Academy Group Piano Program
This course will be taught in a group setting of up to eight students, each student with his/her own instrument. Students will be grouped into classes according to age. The goal of this program is to give students a basic introduction to the piano that may springboard to further study and development. Students, upon successful completion of this program, may be given an opportunity to audition for private lessons at the Vancouver Academy of Music.
Master Class in Violin
Masterclasses will be conducted by the Head of the Violin Department, Robert Rozek, a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music where he studied with Ivan Galamian. He later continued his studies with Franco Gulli in Siena and Nathan Milstein in New York, Zurich, Germany and Italy. Mr. Rozek made his debut at age 15, playing the concertos of Mozart and Bach with the Alexander Schneider Chamber Orchestra in New York, and has since won critical acclaim for his solo performances in Salzburg, Zurich, New York, Helsinki, among other significant musical centres. His conducting career began in Europe where he was musical director of the Luzern Chamber Orchestra in Switzerland.
Mr. Rozek is an internationally recognized violin teacher and has given masterclasses in Siena, Jerusalem, Lusanne, New York, and San Francisco. He was formerly on the faculties of the University of Miami, Miami-Dade Community College-Wolfson Campus and Margess International in St Mortiz, and was director of violin masterclasses in Yverdon, Switzerland
Students performing in masterclasses will be expected to attend classes on a weekly basis.
Master Class in Voice
A weekly two-hour class in Voice will be taught by David Meek. Mr. Meek has held teaching positions at the University of British Columbia and was appointed Head of the Voice Department at the Vancouver Academy of Music in 2001-2002. As Head of the Opera Studio, he has been Artistic Director/Conductor of the Academy’s Summer Opera Production of Street Scene, Tales of Hoffman, The Magic Flute, Die Fledermaus, Albert Herring, Don Giovanni, Suor Angelica, Gianni Schicchi, Così Fan Tutte and The Bartered Bride. As a professional singer, he has performed leading and supporting roles with the Vancouver Opera, Manitoba Opera, Calgary Opera, Edmonton Opera and the Banff Summer Program. Many of David’s students are now pursuing professional careers after winning major competitions, which include winners of the Metropolitan Auditions in New York.
Students enrolled in the voice private instruction program may also attend the voice master class.
Opera Studio Program
Under the direction of distinguished professional faculty member, David Meek Music Director/Conductor, the Academy of Music offers voice students the opportunity to participate in an extensive opera training program for young singers.
The Opera Studio provides a six-week Scene Study Workshop in each semester. The purpose being to develop students’ vocal and dramatic interpretative powers through practical experience on a selected operatic repertoire. The program culminates each year with a fully-staged and costumed Opera Production presented in a professional theatre. These productions are subject to audition requirements and will enable successful students to enhance their stagecraft and showcase their talents through genuine performance experience.
Finally, the program will offer a sixteen-week Opera-History course in which students explore operatic history and tradition in the context of social, political and cultural movements of representative time-periods.
The Vancouver Academy of Music Opera Studio is designed for serious, career-oriented singers as a stepping-stone to professional opera.
Workshop and Master Class in Piano
Academy piano students may participate in a weekly master class with the Head of the Piano Department, Lee Kum-Sing.
Lee Kum-Sing has concertized in England, France, Belgium, Germany, the United States, Canada, and throughout Asia. Since his arrival in Vancouver, he has developed an outstanding reputation as a master teacher. His pupils rank among the finest in the country and have won many awards in national and international competitions.
Candidates for piano workshop or piano master class must be recommended by their private teacher. Acceptance and placement in these classes is determined by audition.
Chamber Music Chamber music groups at the Academy are organized and coached by members of the faculty. Before joining a chamber music group the student must be recommended by his private teacher and must play an audition for acceptance and subsequent placement. Strings and Wind & Brass students participating in the Chamber Music Program must be members of the Orchestral Program.
Classical Guitar Program
The classical guitar course is under the direction of Hanh Nguyen, well-known Vancouver teacher. Ms Nguyen received her Bachelor of Music from Western Washington University and studied with Oscar Ghiglia and Stephen Boswell. She won first prize in the North-West Guitar Festival and the Portland Guitar Solo Competition. Her chamber music trio won the cbc Chamber Music Competition and was featured in the cbc “West Coast Performance.” Hanh has given concerts throughout Canada and the United States.
The solo guitar repertoire is richly endowed with classical music of all periods, and this is supplemented by ensemble classes and chamber music groups which are an integral part of the program. Advanced students are enrolled in Master Classes concentrating on interpretation, advanced repertoire, and concerto performance.
Academy Symphony Orchestra
Students in the Academy Symphony Orchestra enjoy a unique approach to learning orchestra repertoire. The core of the orchestra is made up of the Academy strings and the Academy wind ensembles. These individual string and wind groups function independently in concerts and in weekly rehearsals. Three times each year they unite to perform as a symphony orchestra. Full orchestra concerts are preceded by a one-week workshop, and students work with guest artists and conductors for the workshop-concert weeks.
Admission to the Academy Symphony Orchestra is by audition. Students wishing to audition but who do not study privately at the Academy are asked to discuss their plans with their teacher and obtain the teacher’s permission.
